A 14-year-old boy from Phoenix, Arizona has received a creative punishment from his parents after it was discovered he had taken the family’s Range Rover out for a dangerous joyride.

The boy’s father, Ramon Martinez explained that he and his wife were on holiday on Las Vegas for their wedding anniversary when they received a call from Phoenix police officers after 14-year-old Angel Martinez had been spotted speeding through their North Phoenix neighbourhood, reports the Daily Mail.

“I just wanted to drive but I don’t have a license so I just took it,” Angel Martinez said, “I can wash the car, and I was like I don’t have anything to dry it, so I’m gonna take it for one spin until it dries.”

That explanation didn’t seem to cut it for his parents, and when they returned from their vacation, they decided upon a unique punishment.

They emptied his bedroom and gave away all his belongings. If that wasn’t enough, they then made him sit outside with his belongings with a cardboard sign that read, “Sorry I stole my parents’ car and was speeding.”

Angel had to witness his clothes, designer sneakers, his bed, and his TV being handed over to strangers who came by.

Ramon explained that it was mostly to apologise to their neighbours, “He could’ve run someone over. Something really bad could’ve happened.”

He added that hopefully the lesson will serve its purpose, and for now he will be doing his best to keep Angel out of trouble.

Angel took it in his stride.

“It’s kind of weird, but I think it’s a fair punishment,” he said.
